Dal punto di vista architettonico la chiesa si presenta a tre navate, due laterali soffittate e quella di mezzo più alta, fabbricata con volte sostenute da otto colonne, quattro per parte.
In un disegno dell’Ing. Lodovico Bolognini del 1809, la chiesa appare ad una sola navata, con un frontale disadorno e la torre campanaria eretta sul lato opposto rispetto all’attuale.
I progetti che determinarono l’assetto attuale della Parrocchiale, ebbero inizio a partire dal 1832, per opera dell’allora Arciprete per riparare i danni provocati dal rovinoso terremoto che in quell’anno colpì tutto il reggiano. Furono allora aggiunti il coro, due corpi esterni corrispondenti alle navate laterali ed ornata la facciata in stile Rinascimento, come appare oggi.
A causa di quella calamità naturale fu lesionata in modo irreparabile anche l’antica torre, tanto che, nel 1840, su progetto dell’Ing. Pietro Marchelli, si provvide a costruirne una nuova, l’attuale, più visibile, inconfondibile elemento di identità del territorio. Successivamente furono poi rifatti gli altari laterali, l’altare maggiore in marmo bianco di Carrara, ampliata e rinnovata la parte fonica dell’organo, restaurato nel 1996.
